Default Do meta tags still work?

Do Meta tags, Atl tags H1, H2 still help websites SERP's?

Everyone says that google doesn't count them, but still I see them in the description of the positions.

Yes they still 'work'. But since everyone basically uses meta tags, people say they are becoming useless. But hey, better safe than sorry. Even if they aren't as important anymore, might as well use them.

Always use them. Search engines will understand them, and it does help. All the factors do.

Even bolding your keywords in text areas helps. Try it all, it all adds up.

Google has only taken the weight previously given to meta keywords. All other meta thing still have the weight in algorithm. Better to use 4,5 meta keywords as we might never know when the algorithm might change.

But I don't see the point using them if they don't bring any traffic/SERP's.

May be easy for small sites, but it becomes a hectic task for large websites with 100's of pages IMO

According to many people, Google does not care about meta tags, so you're right about the SERPs. However, Yahoo does care, and they can improve your Yahoo SERPs.

Some people say that it adds little value to your ranking, some say that meta tags are history...

It is better to add them because every little helps.

Finally, someone who agrees that every little helps.
It takes a long time to get going, and to monetize the tags, but adding this with other relevant content, and matching your keywords with other sites with your content, you will see multiple results on different domains advertising your site, making you a lot more popular.

Good example, why would they penalize you for stuffing meta tags if they are not important.

Keyword Stuffing is a popular SEO term I have found. I read a lot about it after axs mentioned it in his SEO guide topic. It is recognised by all major search engines, and probably a lot of the lower grade ones.

Meta tags are still crawled by SE's. The only thing is that they do not give weight to meta tags, but if you stuff keywords they surely will penalize you. This is because you are trying to mislead the SE's

Even if they weren't important, you shouldn't have done that.

Are you sure it's recognized by all major search engines?

Yep, a few blog posts said about it, and they mentioned MSN, Google and Yahoo and another one mentioned Ask.

Thats all the major ones isn't it? Well the ones I consider major anyways. If I missed one, I simply don't use it.

As mentioned in another post, Ask.com is very popular for sites which are question and answer based. If you have a blog and your titles are all questions, you will have a lovely time with Ask.com
