The best way would be to use an online tool to do it for you (like this one)
But you can create your own manually if you like, it's an XML file you need to create. |

But I assume that manually is far more different, tougher. Is it maybe better to create a sitemap manually? |

The only difference with making it yourself is that you can make pages have prioritys better than if you use a tool to do it. For bigger sites a tool is much better to use. |

A good way to add a sitemap to a blog is to use Google Sitemap's Generator Plugin. This plugin can be downloaded from the link below:

Yes, but you asked him what blogging software he uses, when he hasn't even said it's a blog.

Don't be nervous guys!!!
Just joking.![]() I don't use any blog software but I am planning to build a website in the following few weeks or maybe month or two,we will see... so I am collecting information. I think that blogs are not good as websites. I think that the title of the thread was clear enough"How to make a sitemap for a website?" |

Many forums and CMSs have plugins/extensions for a sitemap generator. Otherwise you can just use that one online and tweak it.

I used the generator and I exceeded the 500 page limit.
Oh well. It's just an experiment anyway. Generally google has had no problem indexing my website anyway. What I really need to do is update my exclusions. Sometimes google will index pages you never intended for them to. btw ... it is a good idea to inform google of your new sitemap using their webmaster tools. Least, I hope it's a good idea ... since I did. ![]() Last edited by rabble; 01-21-2009 at 11:04 AM. Reason: spelling correction |

One more thought...As a marketing consultant, I would like to ask readers to review that actual names of their pages before submitting their site map. Webmasters sometimes defer to generic names and do not see the marketing aspect with the goal to not only get indexed but customers, so re look at your page names, update your pages and site map on a regular basis and you should be seeing traffic soon.

The results were good, but since it was limited to 500 links .... well, it didn't map the whole site. So, I downloaded google's generator and that was great! because by using google's webmaster tools I was able to find out all kinds of stuff about my site I would not have otherwise known. So ... thanks a lot for this thread. It really put me on a great path! Thing is ... I got to thinking one day .... (and that really isn't always the best idea) that my website was getting incredibly hard to maintain and wouldn't it be great if my pages would somehow get smaller and easier to access with my favorite editor. And, even though I've been told php is the way to go for getting smaller editable files, I just can't seem to wrap my head around php. So ... I decided to take a spin with iframes. The look of the website and ease of editing is turning out to be everything I had hoped for. But .... and this is the point of the post ... when I did that google freaked out totally and stopped listing my pages. Now I am doing an entire xml sitemap by hand because robots can't follow my linkage. Very tedious and time consuming.Oh yeah. A secondary observation. Swithing to iframes screwed all my .htaccess files, too. Talk about a good idea having bad consequences. ![]() Last edited by rabble; 08-25-2009 at 12:59 PM. |

Just joking.

Very tedious and time consuming.
